European Union puts 5G and Huawei under the microscope

The European Union is carryng out a close examination of planned high speed 5G mobile network technologies. This could affect Huawei who are the dominant company in this sphere.
They are especially concerned about potential security threats posed by countries that host technology partners but which lack the democratic and legal restrictions observed by most western countries.

European states have been concerned with how to address American pressure to block Huawei from building new telecommunications infrastructure within their areas.

U.S. security experts have long been concerned about Huawei’s dominance over the new telecommunications technology.
A report from the European Union listed a number of challenges with 5G technology. It identified three security concerns that could occur due to their reliance on vendors linked to technology coming from specific suppliers.

Some concerns raised by the new EU analysis include inserting concealed hardware, software or flaws into the 5G network; or the risk of uncontrolled software updates, backdoors or undocumented testing features left in the networking

The EU is especially concerned as the vulnerabilities can’t be easily remedied with small technical changes, but are instead strategic, and long lasting in nature.

Its however been reported by the New York Times that the U.S. government may allow some companies to resume selling to Huawei, reversing a ban on selling any technology to it that has been imposed sincve the summer.
